-Is it true there is a hose pipe ban in Southern Italy?
Technically there is, it is a ban that can be enforced due to the obvious limit on water supply.
It is important to be efficient in this day and age so i would personally recommend a irrigation
system that maximises water use by drip feeding the exact plants that you wish at specific
points of the day to help conserve this precious commodity.
-Can i grow a lawn here?
Yes, it is quite possible you first look at the kind of grass that you use, ie: pick something that
is more hardy and there are also the artificial alternatives, failing this i would ceramic or
deck an area.
-Is there any limit to the amount of trees i can plant in my garden?
There is no limit as such but the most important thing to consider is the space that the trees
will need in order to grow, a good example is 1 tree per 3 meter radius and be sure to water
well when they are young. It is typical in the Med to plant a lemon tree closest to the kitchen
door.
-How easy is it to deck or ceramic a garden area?
It is easy to do this and there are no need for any licence on your own property. There are
good companies, especially in the North of Italy that have decking and if you are looking to
tile ensure that you buy the right type of tiles for the conditions they will be placed in.
-When planting my garden are there any problematic plants i should be aware of?
Yes there are a few plants that will swamp your garden as well as be poisonous. Typically
these are the same as the UK. One shrub in particularly called kalmia latifolia is harmful if
eaten and is very dangerous for children.
-Can i grow herbs in my garden?
Italy has some great herbs with many type of Basil and Parsley as well as Rosemary and
Oregano. These plants are best left in plant pots will lots of space with only a little sun and
water. They will thrive, also you get that fantastic smell mmmmm.
